About Jim
Jim and Sandy Trowbridge were married on February 8, 1969. Over their 55 years together, they built a life rich with love, laughter, and legacy. They raised three daughters—Tracy, Kim, and Terri. Jim was the kind of dad and grandpa who showed up for everything: ball games, school plays, graduations, recitals. And most Sundays, he made dinner. He was the cornerstone of our family.
He taught us how to fix things, how to be kind, how to laugh at ourselves, and—most of all—how to show up for the people we love. With a big heart, a sharp sense of humor, and a special way of making everyone feel like family, he was our biggest cheerleader, our teacher, and our steady hand.
Jim had many passions that kept him endlessly curious and full of life. He was a skilled beekeeper who loved sharing his knowledge with others—which is why this race is, fittingly, “all about the bees.” He found joy in gardening, hunting, fishing, and bird watching. A true craftsman, he built three homes by hand in the Basehor area, each one infused with care, love, and precision. He was a builder in every sense of the word.
He also loved to dance—and when Jim danced, everyone smiled. Whether it was at a wedding, in the kitchen, or when just the right song came on (The Lion King soundtrack was a family favorite), he’d start moving—and we’d all follow. His joy was contagious.
Jim cheered for the Royals, the Chiefs, the KU Jayhawks, and of course, the Basehor Bobcats. But his favorite team of all was his family. He was blessed with nine grandkids and four great-grandkids—many of whom will be running (or riding in strollers) in his honor at this 5K. And in true Jim fashion, we know he’d be laughing at the idea of a race in his name—he absolutely hated running.
Jim Trowbridge was a hero to many—quietly generous, endlessly wise, deeply loving, and full of joy. This event is more than a 5K. It’s a celebration of the man who gave us roots, gave us wings, and gave us a thousand reasons to smile.
