This September, we’re lacing up our running shoes not just for fitness, but for a cause close to our hearts. The first-ever Jim Trowbridge Memorial 5K is happening Saturday, September 27th and it’s more than just a community fun run — it’s a tribute to a man who meant so much to so many.
Jim Trowbridge was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and the heart of the Basehor community. He was always quick with a joke, a smile or a helping hand. One of his greatest passions was beekeeping, and he loved nothing more than teaching others about the vital role bees play in our world. His joy for life, love of learning and commitment to community inspired all who knew him.
That’s why this year, all proceeds from the 5K will be donated to a local Save the Bees organization in his honor. It’s our way of continuing his legacy and supporting a cause he cared deeply about.
- A Community Icon and the Buzz Behind His Legacy
If you lived in Basehor, you knew Jim — or at least knew of him. Whether he was helping someone fix a leaky faucet, handing out honey jars from his latest harvest or cracking jokes with the crew at the hardware store, he left a lasting impression. Jim’s passion for beekeeping wasn’t just a hobby — it was his way of connecting with nature and educating others about how small actions can make a big difference in the environment.
- Why Bees? Why Now?
Bees are essential to our food supply and ecosystems. They pollinate nearly 75% of the crops that feed us, but their populations are declining due to habitat loss, pesticides and climate change. Jim recognized this threat years ago and took every chance he could to teach the next generation about pollinators. Through this 5K, we’re carrying forward his passion for education and conservation in a fun, impactful way.
The event will feature a timed race, local vendors, food trucks, family-friendly activities, live music and more — all centered around bringing the community together and raising awareness for pollinator protection. Whether you’re a seasoned runner, a casual walker, or just want to come out and show support, we’d love to have you.
- How You Can Get Involved
We know not everyone is a runner — but that’s the beauty of this event. You can run, walk, volunteer, sponsor part of the event or simply show up and cheer everyone on. We’re also looking for local businesses to join us by sponsoring a booth, being a vendor or just helping spread the word. Every bit of support counts and helps this event become something truly special.
- Let’s Make This First 5K One to Remember
This isn’t just a run. It’s a movement. A gathering of neighbors, friends, and families to celebrate someone who gave so much and to protect something that gives back to all of us. So bring your running shoes, your sweet tooth (for local honey, of course!) and your community spirit. Let’s run, remember and rally for a future where both bees — and legacies like Jim’s — continue to thrive.
You can learn more or register for the event on our website. Let’s make this first 5K one to remember, just like Jim would’ve wanted.
